Gas (fees)

Also called: gas fee · network fee · transaction fee

In shortThe fee you pay a blockchain network to process your transaction or run a smart contract.

Gas is paid in the chain's native coin (ETH on Ethereum, SOL on Solana). It rises when the network is busy, because users bid for limited space in each block.

Complex actions — a swap, a DeFi deposit — use more gas than a simple transfer. Layer 2 networks exist largely to make gas cheaper.
