Ethereum

Also called: ETH · Ether

In shortA programmable blockchain where developers deploy smart contracts; its native coin is Ether (ETH).

Ethereum launched in 2015 and added something Bitcoin did not have: a general-purpose computer that anyone can program with smart contracts. Most of DeFi, NFTs and stablecoins were first built on it.

ETH pays for gas (transaction fees) and secures the network through proof of stake since "the Merge" in 2022. Many layer 2 networks settle their transactions on Ethereum.
