Overview
Velo is a payment and settlement network for sending money across borders, focused on Southeast Asia. It was incubated with support from CP Group, one of Thailand’s largest conglomerates, and is built mainly on the Stellar blockchain, with a version on BNB Chain.
In 2020, Velo merged with Interstellar, a Stellar-based startup, to speed up its payment technology.
How it works
Velo connects licensed payment companies, exchanges and banks so they can settle cross-border payments in seconds instead of days. Its current pitch is “PayFi”: combining licensed fiat payment rails, settlement on several blockchains and netting of payments between institutions.
One example is a remittance corridor between Europe and Thailand, built with TEMPO Payments and the Thai exchange Bitazza, where transfers settle on Stellar within seconds.
The VELO token
| VELO at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Total supply | about 24 billion VELO |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 17.6 billion |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.0036 |
| All-time high | about $2.29 (March 2021) |
| Market cap | about $63 million |
VELO is used within the network as collateral and for staking. How much real payment volume depends on the token is not clear from public data.
Risks
- Low visible activity. DeFiLlama shows only a few million dollars in value on Velo’s on-chain products.
- Token role. Payment partners may not need to hold much VELO.
- Competition. Stablecoins like USDT and USDC, and banks themselves, are moving into fast cross-border payments.
- Supply. Billions more VELO can still be released.
Velo vs. the competition
| Velo | Stellar (XLM) | USDC | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Payment network on Stellar | Payment blockchain | Dollar stablecoin |
| Focus | Southeast Asia, remittances | Global payments | Global dollar transfers |
| Backed by | CP Group partners | Stellar Foundation | Circle |
Our verdict
Velo has a sensible goal and well-connected backers, and cross-border payments in Asia are a real market. But public activity is small, the token’s link to payments is unclear, and VELO has lost more than 99% of its value. VELO is a very high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
