Overview

Morpho is a lending protocol founded by Paul Frambot and built by Morpho Labs in France. It started as an optimizer on top of Aave and Compound, then launched its own system, Morpho Blue, in 2024.

Morpho became one of DeFi’s biggest lending platforms, with over $11 billion in deposits according to DeFiLlama (around $14 billion including all products). Much of its growth comes from Coinbase, which uses Morpho behind the scenes for crypto-backed loans on Base.

How it works

  • Markets: each market pairs one collateral asset with one loan asset (for example, bitcoin to borrow USDC), with fixed risk settings. Problems in one market don’t spread to others.
  • Vaults: independent curators such as Gauntlet, Steakhouse or Bitwise create vaults that spread deposits across markets they choose. Depositors pick a vault based on its strategy and risk.
  • Vaults V2 (2025) and Morpho Midnight (July 2026), a fixed-rate lending protocol, expand the options.

Coinbase loans through Morpho passed $1 billion within six months of launch; in 2026, Coinbase added SOL-backed loans, and Robinhood integrated Morpho into its Earn product.

The MORPHO token

MORPHO at a glance
Maximum supply 1 billion MORPHO
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 703 million
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $2.27
All-time high about $4.17 (January 2025)
Market cap about $1.6 billion (#61)

MORPHO is the governance token of the Morpho DAO. In 2025, Morpho Labs became a subsidiary of the non-profit Morpho Association, making MORPHO the single asset representing the project.

Risks

  • Curator risk. If a curator adds risky collateral, depositors in that vault can lose money; some vaults took losses during 2025’s market stress.
  • Token value. MORPHO doesn’t yet receive a direct, large share of protocol revenue.
  • Dependence on partners. Coinbase brings a big share of activity.
  • Smart-contract risk.

Morpho vs. the competition

Morpho Aave Maple
Model Isolated markets + curated vaults Shared pools (V3), hub-and-spoke (V4) Loans to institutions
Deposits (Oct 2026) ~$11 billion ~$18 billion ~$2.5 billion
Big partner Coinbase Many Robinhood (syrupUSDG)

Our verdict

Morpho has become core DeFi infrastructure, trusted by Coinbase and growing steadily, with a flexible design and new fixed-rate products. MORPHO has held up better than most tokens. Still, vault risk varies and the token’s link to revenue is limited. MORPHO is a high-risk but well-founded DeFi investment. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
