LayerZero review

Reviewed

Overview

LayerZero is a cross-chain messaging protocol built by LayerZero Labs, led by Bryan Pellegrino, and launched in 2022. It lets apps send messages and tokens between more than 100 blockchains. Many major tokens use its OFT standard to exist natively on several chains at once.

The ZRO token launched in June 2024. Its airdrop was famous for a “proof of donation” requirement: claimers had to donate a small amount per token to Ethereum developers, and the team aggressively filtered out bot accounts.

How it works

  • Apps send messages through LayerZero; independent verifiers (DVNs), chosen by each app, check them before delivery.
  • This lets each app pick its own security level instead of trusting a single bridge operator.
  • LayerZero owns Stargate, a large bridge for moving tokens between chains (its STG token was merged into ZRO).

How ZRO gains value

  • Fee switch: every six months, holders vote on whether LayerZero should charge a fee per message (paid in ZRO and burned). So far, the votes have not passed.
  • Buybacks: Stargate’s revenue funds ZRO buybacks; LayerZero says over $112 million has been spent on buybacks since September 2025.
  • Zero: LayerZero has announced Zero, its own blockchain, where ZRO would be the staking and gas token and receive major fee flows. It is not yet live.

The ZRO token

ZRO at a glance
Maximum supply 1 billion ZRO
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 400 million
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $1.76
All-time high about $7.47 (December 2024)
Market cap about $700 million (#88)

Risks

  • Value capture. Without a fee switch, ZRO depends on buybacks and future Zero fees.
  • Unlocks. About 60% of ZRO is still locked.
  • Security. Cross-chain systems are frequent targets; a bad verifier setup in an app could be exploited.
  • Competition. Wormhole, Chainlink CCIP and others compete for the same business.

Our verdict

LayerZero is one of the most important pieces of multichain crypto, and Stargate-funded buybacks give ZRO real support. But holders keep rejecting protocol fees, and the Zero blockchain is still a promise. ZRO is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
