Overview
The Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation, led by Dominic Williams. It launched in May 2021 after years of development and big fundraising.
Its ambition is to become a “world computer”: a blockchain that can run entire apps and websites directly on-chain, replacing traditional cloud servers.
ICP’s launch was dramatic: it briefly traded at a valuation of tens of billions of dollars, then fell more than 95% within weeks, leading to lawsuits and accusations of insider selling.
How it works
- Apps run in canisters, smart contracts that can store data and serve web pages directly to browsers.
- Chain-key cryptography lets ICP sign transactions on other blockchains, for example holding real bitcoin (ckBTC) without bridges.
- Users pay with “cycles”, converted from ICP, and ICP is staked in the Network Nervous System, its governance system.
Caffeine and AI
In 2025–2026, DFINITY launched Caffeine, an AI tool that lets people build and publish apps on ICP simply by describing them in chat. Caffeine v3 launched in April 2026, and ICP jumped more than 12% that day. DFINITY claims ICP now has more builders than any other network, a figure that hasn’t been independently verified.

In January 2026, holders approved Mission 70, a plan to cut ICP’s inflation sharply by the end of 2026.
Risks
- Trust. The 2021 crash and lawsuits still affect ICP’s reputation.
- Unverified usage. Many adoption figures come from DFINITY itself.
- Centralization. DFINITY has a large say in governance and development.
- Competition. Traditional cloud and other blockchains compete for developers.

Our verdict
ICP is one of crypto’s most technically ambitious projects, and Caffeine gives it a fresh, AI-driven story. But its painful history, hard-to-verify usage and DFINITY’s central role remain concerns, and the price is more than 99% below its peak. ICP is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
