Overview
Gate (formerly Gate.io) is one of the oldest crypto exchanges, founded by Lin Han and operating since 2013. Its token, GateToken (GT), launched in 2019.
How it works
- Perks on Gate: fee discounts, access to new token launches and VIP benefits.
- Quarterly burns: Gate uses a share of its profits each quarter to buy back and burn GT. In 2026, it burned about 2–2.6 million GT each quarter (around $18–22 million each time). In total, about 192 million GT — roughly 64% of the original 300 million — has been burned.
- Gate Layer: GT is the only gas token of Gate Layer, Gate’s blockchain, which hosts products such as a perpetuals exchange, a meme launchpad and a swap.
The GT token
| GT at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Supply (Oct 2026) | about 117 million GT |
| Original supply | 300 million GT |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $9.69 |
| All-time high | about $25.38 (January 2025) |
| Market cap | about $1 billion (#75) |
Risks
- Exchange dependence. Problems at Gate would hit GT directly.
- Regulation. Gate does not serve some major markets, including the US.
- Small ecosystem. Gate Layer’s apps are still small.
- Liquidity. Most GT trading happens on Gate.

Our verdict
GT has one of the most aggressive burn records of any exchange token and a growing role on Gate Layer. But it remains a bet on one exchange, and it has fallen well below its 2025 peak. GT is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
