Ethena review

Reviewed

Overview

ENA is the governance token of Ethena, the protocol behind USDe, a “synthetic dollar” backed by crypto and short futures positions (see our separate USDe review). Ethena was founded by Guy Young and launched ENA in April 2024 with a large airdrop.

Ethena became one of the fastest-growing DeFi protocols: USDe passed $14 billion in 2025, earning hundreds of millions of dollars in yield from futures markets. Most of that yield goes to USDe stakers (sUSDe), and part goes to Ethena’s reserves.

How ENA works

  • ENA holders vote on Ethena’s risk and product decisions.
  • Staked ENA (sENA) earns rewards from partner projects.
  • A proposed fee switch would direct protocol revenue to ENA buybacks, but only once USDe supply passes $7.5 billion (rising at higher levels). With USDe around $4.5 billion in October 2026, the switch was not yet active.

2025–2026 changes

  • StablecoinX, a listed company created in 2025, raised hundreds of millions of dollars to buy and hold ENA, including a large buyback in September 2025.
  • In August 2026, the Ethena Foundation bought out locked tokens from early seed investors and ended monthly investor unlocks, and agreed with Ethena Labs to move the protocol’s IP and economic value to the Foundation. ENA nearly doubled in a month afterwards.

The ENA token

ENA at a glance
Maximum supply 15 billion ENA
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 13.4 billion
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $0.21
All-time high about $1.52 (April 2024)
Market cap about $2.9 billion (#39)

Risks

  • Depends on USDe. If USDe shrinks or runs into trouble, ENA loses its main source of value.
  • Funding rates. Ethena’s income depends on crypto futures markets, which can turn unfavorable.
  • Conditional value. Buybacks only start if growth targets are met.
  • Supply. Most of the 15 billion ENA is already circulating, but holders can still sell large amounts.

Our verdict

Ethena built one of the most successful DeFi products of the cycle, and the 2026 investor buyout removed a major source of selling. If USDe grows again, ENA could benefit directly through buybacks.

But much depends on that growth, and ENA has lost about 86% of its value since launch. ENA is a high-risk bet on USDe’s future. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
