Overview

Derive is a decentralized exchange for crypto options and perpetual futures. It began in 2021 as Lyra, one of the first options platforms on Ethereum’s Layer 2s, and rebranded as Derive in late 2024, swapping the LYRA token for DRV.

Options let traders bet on or protect against price moves with defined risk, and are widely used by professional traders. Derive brings them on-chain, so users trade from their own wallets.

How it works

  • Derive runs on Derive Chain, its own Layer 2 built with the OP Stack, with deposits from Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum.
  • Trading uses an order book, like a traditional exchange, with fast matching.
  • Market makers provide prices; users can trade options, perpetuals and structured products that earn yield.
  • Derive’s planned V3 upgrade, approved in 2026, would replace its rollup with a zero-knowledge exchange that settles directly on Ethereum.

2026 milestones

  • April 2026: the DAO raised the share of protocol revenue going to stakers from 25% to 35%, and cut weekly staking emissions from 250,000 to 100,000 DRV.
  • May 2026: DRV listed on Coinbase, its largest centralized listing.
  • Summer 2026: listings on South Korea’s Upbit and Bithumb.
  • October 2026: DRV reached a new all-time high.

The DRV token

DRV at a glance
Maximum supply 1.5 billion DRV
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 1.06 billion
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $0.37
All-time high about $0.57 (October 2026)
Market cap about $390 million

DRV is used for governance and staking; stakers earn a share of the exchange’s revenue.

Risks

  • For users: options and leveraged perpetuals can lose money fast; they are tools for experienced traders.
  • Competition: Deribit (owned by Coinbase) dominates crypto options, and Hyperliquid leads on-chain perps.
  • Supply: about 30% of DRV is not yet circulating.
  • Smart-contract and chain risk: as with any DeFi platform.

Our verdict

Derive is a serious, growing exchange in one of DeFi’s hardest niches, with real revenue shared with stakers and strong listings in 2026. Unlike most tokens in this list, DRV traded near record highs this autumn.

Still, the on-chain options market is small, competition is fierce, and the products are complex. DRV is a high-risk investment, and options trading itself is only for experienced users. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
