Cosmos review

Reviewed

Overview

Cosmos calls itself the “internet of blockchains”. It was created by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, with the Tendermint consensus engine, and raised about $17 million in a 2017 token sale. The Cosmos Hub, whose token is ATOM, launched in 2019.

The vision: instead of one blockchain for everything, many independent chains, each built for its own purpose, can talk to each other.

How it works

  • The Cosmos SDK is a toolkit for building blockchains. Chains such as Injective, Celestia, dYdX, Sei and many others use it.
  • IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) lets these chains send tokens and messages to each other securely; over 100 chains are connected.
  • The Cosmos Hub is one chain in this network. ATOM is staked to secure it and used in governance.
  • Cosmos Labs (supported by the Interchain Foundation) now leads development of the core technology.

The value-capture problem

Cosmos technology is everywhere, but chains built with it don’t have to use or pay ATOM. As a result, ATOM has struggled to benefit from the ecosystem’s success. Holders have long debated how to fix this.

In late 2025, Cosmos Labs proposed a tokenomics overhaul that would tie inflation to network fees and lower it from about 7–10% to a range of about 2–6%, with higher rewards for locked staking. Some community members have also called on the Interchain Foundation to use its reserves to buy back ATOM.

The ATOM token

ATOM at a glance
Supply (Oct 2026) about 539 million ATOM
Maximum supply none (inflationary)
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $1.62
All-time high about $43.84 (September 2021)
Market cap about $880 million (#81)

Risks

  • Weak value capture. The ecosystem can grow without ATOM rising.
  • Inflation. New ATOM dilutes holders who don’t stake.
  • Governance disputes. The Cosmos community has had frequent, public disagreements.
  • Competition. Ethereum’s Layer 2s, Polkadot and others offer similar models.

Cosmos vs. the competition

Cosmos Polkadot Avalanche
Model Independent chains connected by IBC Shared security for connected chains Custom L1 chains
Supply No cap Capped at 2.1 billion Capped at 720 million
Ecosystem reach Very wide (SDK, IBC) Smaller Medium

Our verdict

Cosmos has been enormously influential: its tools power much of the multi-chain world. But ATOM has captured little of that value, inflation is high, and the price is about 96% below its peak. ATOM is a high-risk bet on the tokenomics fix working. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
