Muun

Overview

Muun is a self-custody Bitcoin wallet for iOS and Android that makes Lightning payments feel like normal Bitcoin. You have one balance: you can pay Lightning invoices and on-chain addresses from the same funds, with no channels to manage.

How it works

Muun uses 2-of-2 multisig: one key on your phone and one with Muun. Every transaction needs both, so Muun cannot move your money alone. To protect you if Muun disappears, the app creates an Emergency Kit — a PDF with your encrypted keys and instructions to recover your funds with open-source tools. You protect it with a recovery code and password.

Lightning payments work through submarine swaps between on-chain funds and Lightning.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very simple Lightning payments.
  • Self-custody with a solid recovery plan.
  • Open source.

Cons

  • Lightning payments use on-chain swaps, which can be expensive when fees are high.
  • Development has been slow in recent years.
  • Bitcoin only.

Who it’s for

Muun suits Bitcoin users who want an easy phone wallet and occasional Lightning payments.

Verdict

Muun’s design is elegant and safe, but its swap-based Lightning can be costly during busy periods. Good for moderate use; for frequent Lightning payments, Phoenix is often cheaper.
