Overview
MetaMask is the wallet most people meet first when they step into decentralized finance. Launched in 2016 by Consensys, it began as a browser extension that let websites talk to the Ethereum blockchain. Ten years later it is still the default “Connect wallet” option on almost every DeFi app, NFT marketplace and on-chain game.
It is a self-custody wallet: your private keys are created and stored on your own device, and MetaMask never holds your funds. That gives you full control — and full responsibility.
How it works
You install the extension or the mobile app, create a wallet and write down a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. That phrase is the master key to every account in the wallet. A password then protects the wallet on that device.
When a website wants you to sign a transaction, MetaMask opens a pop-up showing what you are approving. You can add as many accounts as you like, switch networks, and import accounts from other wallets.
Networks and features
MetaMask supports Ethereum and all major EVM networks — Linea (Consensys’s own layer 2), Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche and many more — and you can add any EVM network by hand. Since 2025 it also supports Solana and Bitcoin accounts, so it is no longer an Ethereum-only wallet.
Inside the app you can:
- buy crypto with a card or bank transfer through partner providers;
- swap and bridge tokens across networks (MetaMask adds a fee of up to 0.875% on swaps);
- trade perpetual futures (powered by Hyperliquid) and prediction markets;
- stake ETH;
- hold and spend mUSD, MetaMask’s own dollar stablecoin, issued by Stripe’s Bridge and launched in September 2025;
- use the MetaMask Card (with Mastercard) to spend crypto in some countries.
Security
MetaMask’s code is open for anyone to read, and the wallet has a long track record. It now includes transaction security alerts (powered by Blockaid) that warn you before you sign a known malicious request.
The biggest risks are on the user’s side: fake MetaMask websites and apps, fake “support” agents, and malicious signature requests that drain your wallet once approved. MetaMask staff will never ask for your recovery phrase. For larger amounts, connect a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor, Keystone, GridPlus) so that every transaction must also be confirmed on the device.
Note: there is no official MetaMask token yet. Consensys has said a MASK token is planned, which makes “MetaMask airdrop” scams very common — ignore any claim site you didn’t reach through metamask.io.
Pros and cons
Pros
- The most compatible wallet in DeFi; nearly every app supports it.
- Free, open source and battle-tested since 2016.
- Now also handles Solana and Bitcoin.
- Works with all major hardware wallets.
- Rich features: swaps, bridges, perps, staking, a stablecoin and a card.
Cons
- Swap fees are higher than using a DEX directly.
- The interface can feel crowded for beginners.
- A favourite target for phishing and fake apps.
- A browser extension is only as safe as the computer it runs on.
Who it’s for
MetaMask suits anyone who wants to use Ethereum and EVM apps — from first-time DeFi users to experienced traders. Beginners should start with small amounts; anyone holding more should pair it with a hardware wallet.
Verdict
MetaMask remains the standard key to Ethereum’s app world. It is free, flexible and supported everywhere, and it has grown into a multichain wallet with real trading features. Watch the swap fees, guard your 12 words and add a hardware wallet once your balance grows.
