Overview

Coinbase Wallet is the self-custody wallet from Coinbase, the largest US crypto exchange. It is a separate app from the Coinbase exchange: here you hold the keys, not Coinbase, and you do not need a Coinbase account to use it.

The app has had a busy few years. In July 2025 Coinbase renamed it Base App and turned it into a social “everything app” built around its Base network. In September 2026 it changed the name back to Coinbase Wallet, saying the app had become a broader multichain trading platform. If you see “Base App” in older guides, it is the same product.

How it works

New users can create a smart wallet secured by a passkey (your phone’s Face ID or fingerprint), so there is no seed phrase to write down; recovery works through your passkey and cloud backup. A classic wallet with a 12-word recovery phrase is also available.

Features

  • Supports Base, Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, plus newer networks such as Robinhood Chain and Monad.
  • Swaps and cross-chain bridges inside the app.
  • Perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks.
  • Free, instant USDC transfers on Base, and easy funding from a Coinbase account.
  • dApp browser and browser extension for desktop.

Security

Coinbase is a regulated, publicly listed US company with a strong security team, and the smart wallet’s passkeys are resistant to phishing. The wallet itself has not suffered a major hack.

Keep in mind: if you use a classic wallet, losing your recovery phrase means losing your funds — Coinbase support cannot recover a self-custody wallet. Fake “Coinbase support” calls and messages are a very common scam.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very easy start with passkeys, no seed phrase.
  • Strong brand and security team.
  • Seamless link with the Coinbase exchange.
  • Wide set of trading features on Base and other chains.

Cons

  • Frequent rebrands and changes can confuse users.
  • Strong focus on trading and speculation.
  • Swap fees on top of network fees.
  • Not open source.

Who it’s for

A natural first self-custody wallet for Coinbase customers, and a good fit for anyone active on Base. Users who want a simple, stable wallet may find the constant feature changes distracting.

Verdict

Coinbase Wallet makes self-custody easy thanks to passkeys and its close link with the exchange. It has become a capable trading app — just remember that, unlike your exchange balance, here you are the only one responsible for your keys.
