Overview
Argent pioneered smart-contract wallets in 2018. Instead of a single key backed by a seed phrase, your wallet is a smart contract with rules you control. In 2025 the company rebranded as Ready: the mobile app is now Ready, and the Starknet browser extension Argent X is now Ready X. The product works the same way.
How it works
You set up the wallet with your email and phone. Recovery uses guardians — trusted people, devices, or Ready’s own service — who can approve moving your wallet to a new phone. You can set daily transfer limits and lock the wallet if your phone is stolen.
Features
- Built mainly for Starknet, an Ethereum layer 2.
- Swaps, ETH and STRK staking, and perpetual trading in the extension.
- Fees sponsored on some transactions.
- Account features impossible with normal wallets: limits, locks, multisig-style security.
Security
The smart contracts are open source and audited, and the guardian model has worked well for years. The trade-off is that your wallet exists only on supported networks — you cannot import it into MetaMask.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No seed phrase to lose.
- Advanced protections like limits and guardian recovery.
- Leading wallet on Starknet.
Cons
- Limited to supported networks.
- Rebrand may cause confusion.
- Less useful if you don’t use Starknet.
Who it’s for
Starknet users and anyone who wants bank-like protections in a self-custody wallet.
Verdict
Argent, now Ready, shows what smart wallets can do. It is excellent on Starknet, but its narrow network focus limits its appeal.
