"Altcoin" means "alternative coin". The word started as a label for Bitcoin copies, but today it covers everything from Ethereum to the newest memecoin.
Altcoins usually move more than Bitcoin in both directions: they tend to rise faster in a bull market and fall harder in a bear market. Periods when many altcoins beat Bitcoin at once are called altseason.
