Overview
PancakeSwap is the largest decentralized exchange on BNB Chain and one of the biggest DEXs in the world by trading volume. It launched in September 2020, built by an anonymous team of “chefs”, and grew quickly because BNB Chain offered what Ethereum could not at the time: swaps for a few cents instead of tens of dollars.
The name and the cooking theme are playful, but the platform is large and mature. Besides BNB Chain, PancakeSwap now runs on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, zkSync, Linea, opBNB, Polygon zkEVM, Aptos, Solana and, since 2026, Robinhood Chain. It has processed trillions of dollars in cumulative volume, and on BNB Chain it often handles more daily volume than any other DEX.
As with any DEX, there is no account and no KYC: you connect a wallet such as MetaMask, Trust Wallet or Binance Wallet and trade directly from it.
Pool types: v2, v3 and Infinity
- v2: simple pools with liquidity spread across all prices. Every v2 swap costs 0.25%.
- v3: concentrated liquidity, like Uniswap v3. LPs choose a price range. Fee tiers of 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.25% and 1%.
- Infinity (launched in 2025): PancakeSwap’s v4. All pools share one contract, pool creation is cheap, and hooks allow custom features such as dynamic fees. Infinity also offers bin pools (liquidity in fixed price steps, similar to Meteora’s DLMM on Solana).
As a trader you don’t have to choose: the smart router splits your swap across v2, v3, Infinity and StableSwap pools (designed for low-slippage stablecoin trades) to get the best price.
What else you can do
- Farms and Syrup Pools: provide liquidity or stake CAKE to earn rewards.
- Perpetuals: leveraged futures in the PancakeSwap app, powered by Aster (formerly ApolloX).
- Prediction and Lottery: simple games where you bet on BNB’s or CAKE’s price, or buy lottery tickets. Fun, but treat them as gambling.
- IFOs and token launches: early access to new tokens.
- Tokenized stocks: PancakeSwap is one of the main venues for Binance-linked tokenized stocks (bStocks).
- Cross-chain swaps and a built-in bridge.
Fees
| Cost | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| v2 swap fee | 0.25% | Split between LPs, treasury and CAKE burn |
| v3 swap fee | 0.01% – 1% | LPs currently get about 66–68% on EVM chains |
| Infinity swap fee | Set per pool | LPs get up to 90% on some chains |
| Network (gas) fee | A few cents on BNB Chain | Paid to the blockchain |
On BNB Chain, a normal swap costs very little in gas, which makes PancakeSwap one of the cheapest places to trade on-chain. Always check price impact and slippage for small or new tokens.

CAKE tokenomics and “The Flip”
CAKE is PancakeSwap’s token. It has been through several reforms:
- Tokenomics 3.0 (April 2025) ended the old veCAKE locking system, cut daily emissions from about 40,000 to 22,500 CAKE, and set a goal of reducing CAKE supply by about 20% by 2030. Part of the trading fees goes to burning CAKE every week.
- The Flip (proposed in October 2026, now in governance voting) would send 88% of v3 and Infinity swap fees to liquidity providers (12% to the treasury) and cut daily emissions further, from 22,500 to 7,000 CAKE (about 69% less). v2 fees would stay the same. If approved, it would roll out chain by chain from November 2026 to January 2027.
For traders, nothing changes. For LPs, The Flip would mean noticeably higher fee income. For CAKE holders, it means fewer new tokens but also less fee money going to burns, so the long-term effect is still debated.
Security
- No hack of PancakeSwap’s core contracts since launch. The code is open source, audited by several firms, and covered by a bug bounty.
- March 2021: attackers took over PancakeSwap’s domain name (DNS) for a short time and showed a fake site asking for wallet recovery phrases. The contracts were not affected. This is a reminder: no real DEX will ever ask for your seed phrase.
- BNB Chain itself is fast and cheap but more centralized than Ethereum, with a smaller set of validators.
Usual DEX risks apply: fake tokens (check contract addresses), phishing sites (bookmark pancakeswap.finance), unlimited token approvals, and impermanent loss for liquidity providers. Many small tokens on BNB Chain are high-risk or outright scams; the app warns about unverified tokens.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Largest DEX on BNB Chain, with deep liquidity for major pairs
- Very low gas costs on BNB Chain
- Available on many networks, including Solana and Aptos
- Wide range of products: farms, perps, tokenized stocks, launches
- Strong core contract security record
- Self-custodial, no account or KYC
Cons
- The many products (lottery, prediction, farms) can overwhelm beginners
- BNB Chain has many scam tokens; you must check what you buy
- Liquidity on non-BNB networks is much thinner
- CAKE tokenomics keep changing; The Flip vote is still open
- Close ties to the Binance ecosystem, which some users see as a risk
PancakeSwap vs. alternatives
| PancakeSwap | Uniswap | SushiSwap | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2020 | 2018 | 2020 |
| Main network | BNB Chain | Ethereum & L2s | Many chains |
| Typical gas cost | Cents | Cents on L2s, more on Ethereum | Depends on chain |
| Latest version | Infinity (hooks) | v4 (hooks) | v3 |
| Built-in perps | Yes (via Aster) | No | No |
Our verdict
PancakeSwap is the best place to swap tokens on BNB Chain, and a solid, cheap DEX in general. It is mature, has a clean security record for its contracts, very low costs, and more features than almost any other DEX.
Beginners should stick to swaps at first, check token addresses carefully, and ignore the lottery and prediction games. Liquidity providers should watch The Flip vote: if it passes, v3 and Infinity pools on PancakeSwap will pay LPs a much larger share of fees from late 2026.
