Orca

DEXSolana

Overview

Orca is a decentralized exchange on Solana, known for having the cleanest and most beginner-friendly interface in Solana DeFi. It launched in February 2021, founded by Yutaro Mori and Grace Kwan, and in 2022 it introduced Whirlpools, its concentrated liquidity pools. Whirlpools became one of the most used pieces of infrastructure on Solana: many aggregators, wallets and protocols route trades through them.

Since 2021, Orca has processed more than $500 billion in trading volume. In September 2026 it handled about 8% of Solana’s DEX volume, competing with PumpSwap, Raydium and Meteora.

In October 2026, Orca’s team merged with Loopscale, a Solana lending protocol, to form a new company called Formation (more below). The Orca app and its pools continue to run as before.

You only need a Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack. Swaps confirm in about a second and network fees are a fraction of a cent.

Whirlpools: concentrated liquidity

In a classic pool, your liquidity is spread across all possible prices, so most of it sits unused. In a Whirlpool, you choose a price range: your money only works inside that range, so it earns much more in fees per dollar. If the price leaves your range, your position stops earning until you move it or the price comes back.

Orca makes this easier than most DEXs:

  • a simple deposit screen with suggested ranges;
  • full-range positions for people who don’t want to manage ranges;
  • adaptive fees on some pools, which rise when the market is volatile.

LP positions are NFTs, so you can see and move them in your wallet.

Other products

  • Swap: a simple swap screen that routes your trade through the best Whirlpools.
  • Wavebreak (since August 2025): Orca’s token launchpad. New tokens start on a bonding curve and, once they reach their target, “graduate” into an Orca Whirlpool.
  • Limit-order style positions: a narrow one-sided range acts like a limit order that fills as the price passes through.
  • xORCA: stake ORCA to receive xORCA and a share of protocol fees.
  • Developer tools: SDKs and APIs used by many Solana apps.

Fees

Cost Typical amount Notes
Whirlpool swap fee 0.01% – 2% Low tiers for stablecoins and SOL/USDC, high tiers for volatile tokens
Adaptive fee pools Base fee + volatility fee Rises during big price moves
Network fee Under $0.01 Plus optional priority fee

Most of each swap fee goes to liquidity providers; the rest goes to the protocol, which uses it for xORCA rewards and ORCA buybacks. A governance proposal from September 2026 would change this split, sending most protocol fees to team operations and less to xORCA (from 40% to 10%). Check the latest governance outcome if you hold ORCA.

Orca + Loopscale = Formation

On 7 October 2026, Orca and Loopscale announced that their teams were merging into Formation, a New York-based company led by Loopscale co-founder Luke Truitt. Formation wants to combine trading, lending and vaults, and to build products for tokenized credit in sectors such as AI, energy and defence.

Important points for users:

  • The Orca protocol and pools keep working; the merger is about the teams and the company.
  • Financial terms were not disclosed, and a full product roadmap and token plan have not yet been published.
  • Orca’s Council cancelled a tokenholder vote linked to the deal and scheduled a re-run for 11–16 October 2026. Check Orca’s governance forum for the result.

For traders, nothing changes today. For ORCA holders, the merger and the fee proposal could change how much value flows to the token.

Security

  • No major hack of Orca’s contracts since launch. Whirlpools have been audited many times (including by Kudelski and Neodyme) and Orca runs a bug bounty.
  • Orca came through the FTX collapse in 2022 without depending on Serum, unlike some rivals.
  • Orca’s launchpad and open pool creation mean that risky tokens can be traded on Orca too. Check contract addresses and token authorities before buying new tokens.
  • For LPs, the main risk is impermanent loss, which is stronger in narrow ranges.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Cleanest, most beginner-friendly interface on Solana
  • Whirlpools: efficient and widely used concentrated liquidity
  • Very cheap and fast swaps
  • Strong security record, with no major exploit
  • Wavebreak launchpad and xORCA fee sharing
  • Self-custodial, no KYC

Cons

  • Smaller share of Solana volume than a few years ago
  • Fee activity on Whirlpools fell sharply in early 2026
  • Concentrated liquidity still needs some learning
  • Uncertainty around the Formation merger and the new fee split
  • ORCA token price is volatile

Our verdict

Orca is the friendliest place to start with DeFi on Solana. Its swap screen is simple, its Whirlpools are among the most trusted pools on the network, and it has a clean security record. For beginners who want to try providing liquidity, Orca’s deposit screen is the easiest on Solana.

The big question for 2026 is Formation: how the merger with Loopscale and the proposed fee changes will affect Orca’s products and the ORCA token. For everyday swaps, that changes nothing. For LPs and ORCA holders, follow the governance votes closely.
