Overview

KuCoin is a global crypto exchange founded in 2017 by Michael Gan and Johnny Lyu, and based in Seychelles. It is known as “the people’s exchange” and for one thing above all: a very large selection of altcoins, often listed earlier than on Binance, Coinbase or Kraken. It says it serves tens of millions of users in about 200 countries. Since January 2025 its CEO has been BC Wong.

For traders hunting smaller and newer tokens, KuCoin has long been a go-to platform. It also offers some of the best built-in trading bots of any exchange. The other side of the coin is a difficult regulatory history, which you should understand before you sign up.

What you can do on KuCoin

  • Spot trading: hundreds of coins and many more trading pairs, including small-cap tokens rarely found on larger exchanges.
  • Trading bots: free, built-in bots such as spot grid, futures grid, DCA, smart rebalance and infinity grid. You can copy a bot’s settings from other users with one tap. This is one of KuCoin’s strongest features.
  • Margin and futures: margin trading and perpetual futures with leverage (high risk, restricted in some countries).
  • KuCoin Earn: savings, staking and structured products, plus GemSlot and Spotlight for new tokens.
  • KuCoin Pay and KuCard in some regions.
  • KCS token: KuCoin’s own token, which gives fee discounts.

The app is clean and well organized, with a simple mode for buying and a full trading screen for advanced users.

Fees

Product Regular user (maker / taker) Notes
Spot (most coins) 0.10% / 0.10% 20% off when paying in KCS
Spot (some small coins) Higher classes Fee class shown per pair
Futures 0.02% / 0.06% Lower with VIP level
Trading bots Same as spot/futures No extra subscription fee

KuCoin groups coins into fee classes: major coins are in the cheapest class, while some smaller tokens carry higher fees. Check the class before trading a new token. Fees fall with your 30-day volume and KCS holdings. Withdrawal fees vary by coin and network.

Rates at the time of writing (October 2026). Check the official fee page before you trade.

Security

  • Proof of Reserves: KuCoin publishes regular reserve reports with Merkle tree verification of user balances.
  • Account protection: 2FA, a separate trading password, anti-phishing codes, withdrawal whitelists and login alerts.
  • The 2020 hack: in September 2020, attackers stole about $280 million from KuCoin’s hot wallets. KuCoin recovered most of it with help from token projects and other exchanges, covered the rest from its insurance fund, and users did not lose money.

Regulation: what you need to know

KuCoin’s legal record is its weakest point.

  • United States: in January 2025, KuCoin pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business and failing to run a proper anti-money-laundering programme. It agreed to pay about $297 million and to leave the US market for two years.
  • Canada: in 2025, Canada’s financial intelligence agency fined KuCoin about C$20 million for reporting failures.
  • South Korea: in 2026, KuCoin was among the foreign exchanges blocked for operating without registration.

KuCoin in the EU

In November 2025, KuCoin EU (based in Vienna) received a MiCA licence from Austria’s FMA, covering the EEA except Malta. In practice the start has been rocky:

  • In February 2026, the FMA banned KuCoin EU from taking on new business after key anti-money-laundering staff left. The FMA lifted that ban in May 2026, once the roles were refilled.
  • A separate FMA decision from February 2026, linked to governance and management requirements, still prevented KuCoin EU from commencing operations, according to the FMA in May 2026 and later reports.

So, although KuCoin EU holds a licence, EU residents should check whether KuCoin EU is actually open to them before signing up. Do not use the global platform from a country where it is not allowed.

Our verdict

KuCoin is a strong platform for experienced traders who want access to a wide range of altcoins and like to automate strategies with bots. Its product is good, its fees are fair, and it covered users fully after its 2020 hack.

The regulatory picture holds it back. The US guilty plea and the troubled start of KuCoin EU mean it is not the right main exchange for beginners or for EU residents right now. If you use it, keep only your trading balance on the platform, treat early-listed tokens as high-risk bets, and move savings to your own wallet.
